Amazon.co.uk Review

Whenever Paul McCartney's storied life has hit personal or professional hard times, he's wisely returned--figuratively and literally--to his musical foundations. In the Beatles' final, troubled days, it was Get Back, the aborted return-to-roots project salvaged as Let It Be, and during his late-80s solo doldrums it was the 1950s rave-up CHOBA B CCCP (a.k.a. the "Russian Album"). In the wake of Linda's passing, McCartney "gets back" to a motley dozen 50s hits, B-sides and obscurities and pens three surprising originals that neatly fit their mould. Using a band of seasoned British vets (including Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour and Mick Green from Johnny Kidd & the Pirates on guitars, and Deep Purple's Ian Paice on drums) whose own unbridled affection for this music radiates from every track, McCartney tackles the familiar (Gene Vincent's "Blue Jean Bop," Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up") and unfamiliar (the Vipers' skiffle hit "No Other Baby," Carl Perkins's "Movie Magg") alike with enthusiasm, if not slavish devotion (as witnessed by his nifty zydeco revamp of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man"). The Mac originals "Try Not to Cry" and "What It Is" (and the choice of Ricky Nelson's "Lonesome Town") seem to deal not-so-obliquely with his love and loss, yet are delivered with an upbeat confidence that seem to belie his mourning. In the end, Run Devil Run may be as much personal exorcism as it is loving musical recapitulation, and McCartney is in peak vocal form throughout. --Jerry McCulley

CD Description

After decades spent making lush, carefully crafted pop records, Paul McCartney makes a joyous return to his roots with RUN DEVIL RUN. On this album, McCartney returns to the musicthat first inspired him to become a musician--early rock & roll, rockabilly, and R&B. Much as Bob Dylan journeyed back to his folk roots and invested them with new resonance on WORLD GONE WRONG, McCartney attacks the material here with freshness and vitality.
The opener, Gene Vincent's "Blue Jean Bop", is a perfect recreation of the vintage '50s rockabilly sound. The rest of McCartney's covers, including Carl Perkins' "Movie Magg" and Johnny Burnette's "Honey Hush" sidestep nostalgia in favour of the kind of raw, unfettered approach that made rock & roll exciting to begin with. A couple ofMcCartney originals, including the title tune, mine a similar late-'50s lode to fine effect. Despite the presence of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Deep Purple's Ian Paice, RUN DEVIL RUN is no leaden arena-rock stab at rockabilly. Recordedin just a week, it's a fevered, energetic slab of real rock& roll, full of grit and soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last great rock 'n' roll album, 14 Jan 2000
By M. Stay "Mark Stay" (Epsom, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Most rock stars, after the terrible kind of loss that Sir Paul has suffered in the last year, would foist upon us the kind of indulgent ballads that Phil Collins has been trotting out for years. (Many of his albums could easily be titled 'Arguments I've Had' and 'Wives and Girlfriends who've left me').

But McCartney has realised that time waits for no man and he's finally got around to that Rock 'n' Roll album he's been promising himself for years, and what a belter it is too. The album was recorded under the strictest conditions in two frenetic weeks at Abbey Road. The band had no idea of what they were going to record; McCartney would pull a song from a manila envelope, play it to the band on guitar and they would record it straight away. No overdubs, no warm ups, just a few takes and then it was filed away and they would begin work on the next one.

This process has given the album an energy which not only belies the collective age of the band members (which must at least two hundred plus) but makes most young bands currently topping the charts look slow and maudlin. McCartney sings like a teenager and drives each track on full burn (although few run over three minutes), former Pirates guitarist Mick Green adds a fluent rhythm which attests to decades of hard gigging (once upon a time The Beatles supported The Pirates). Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour, not a guitarist known for his improvisation, taps hitherto unknown reserves of brilliance and Deep Purple's Ian Paice knocks the whole thing into shape.

Run Devil Run is a triumph; it's not only a time capsule for future historians of Rock 'n' Roll but dissolves any notions that McCartney was only a Yesterday balladeer. Buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life in the old dog...., 26 Jul 2003
To my mind, the best McCartney album. No pretention, no churn-'em-out rubbish. No doubting the fact that he's a master songwriter, having written upmteen timeless classics, he's also output some less-than-credible works over the years. OK, so nobody's perfect. But this album captures the raw live energy and enthusiasm that you wouldn't expect from an old codger! When you listen to this recording, you can't help but feel that he loved every minute of making it and that sort of thing comes across so rarely these days. He can still make it work. Youth of today, take note!

4.0 out of 5 stars mmmm.....nice, 16 Mar 2000

The best thing about this album is that it doesn't attempt to be anything grandiose or significant - just some talented guys playing rock'n'roll. My favourite track is Coquette - Paul really does sound like a pub singer.
